In Japan, a kamon or mon is like a seal or crest. The same way that medieval knights bore sheilds and emblazoned their armour and robes with heraldry, Japanese feudal families were easily recognizable by their mon, a tradition inspired by the Chinese. Mori Ranmaru, the vassal of the famous Sengoku Period daimyo of the 1500s, Lord Oda Nobunaga of the Oda clan, bore what is called the Dancing Crane.
