Room Reno #58: Oh My Goth!

Welcome back to Room Reno #58 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping out a Sim who loves all things Goth, which is perfect timing because I get to use new items from our brand new Oh My Goth collection! How serendipitous. Let’s meet the Gothic Sim who needs our help.

Meet Eloise!

Eloise has recently moved to a new home in Oasis Springs and is super excited to decorate her new bedroom. It came in an awful shade of purple, and the realtor decorated it for a little girl–but even as a little girl, Eloise was a lover of all things black and gothic. Even if she was the intended recipient of this room, it still wouldn’t fit her style! Eloise works as an interior designer, so she’s very particular about the look of her home, as well as the furniture within it. She only wants the highest quality objects that fit her style perfectly, and she’s not afraid to customize them to suit her needs.

I have a big budget to work with for this room, and I’m very excited to use it–a fireplace would be really cool (or, hot, I suppose), especially if I can find one with goth style carvings or engravings in the stone or wood. (Sidenote, does anyone remember how hard it was to place down fireplaces in The Sims 3? I understand the realism factor of having the chimneys extend all the way up through the house, but boy was it super limiting on the builds themselves). Anyway! Luckily for Eloise, I have a massive new collection of gothic items to make this room perfect for her. Let’s see what we’re working with!

The Before

This room has really great bones! While the original showroom furniture is depressing (and very oddly spaced out), it’s clear that there’s a lot to love in this space. The windows are large and allow for a good amount of natural light. While that may seem counterintuitive for a goth room, having a lot of light means I can control just how much of it actually comes into the room. It’s always better to have more light to begin with, after all. Curtains and blinds are great decorative ways to determine how bright a room is, and there are some really fantastic ones in this collection. Let’s get planning!

The Planning

As with a lot of bedrooms, the planning for this was relatively simple–most bedrooms end up defined by the placement of the bed as the largest furniture piece, with the rest of the furnishings orbiting around it. I decided to keep the bed in the same spot as the display room, away from the windows. Having a bed too close to a window is one of my least favorite things in the world, especially as someone who for some reason always sleeps on the east side of wherever I live. Can you say bright, unpleasant sun in your eyes at 7am? I sure can, and I’d like to avoid that for Eloise.

I considered swapping out the windows for something a little less modern and a little more gothic, but I decided that it really wouldn’t suit the outside of the house to have one room with strange windows that didn’t fit the modern exterior of the house, and a bunch of other rooms with normal windows. The gothic theme will stick to Eloise’s room alone, and with the right curtains and window dressings the windows themselves will hardly be a factor in the room’s overall aesthetic. I think I want to go with a red and black color scheme for this room–all black is hard to photograph well, for one, and I’m also partial to just a little bit of warmth in every space I decorate, even the gothic ones. Dark crimson matches the gothic theme without pushing it too far into bright color, and I’m thankful for that–honestly, I don’t know what I would have done with an all black room. Let’s get building!

The After

This room turned out incredibly well! I’ll be honest–I wasn’t entirely sure of my gothic decorating skills, even if I’ve done a few Goth rooms in the past. My real bedroom is very pink, after all, so this style is pretty much out of my comfort zone. (It could probably be a room in the Trixie Motel…I should try to recreate one of the rooms from the Trixie Motel. That would be fun). Back to Goth–the items in this collection are incredible. Our artists really outdid themselves with this one. I had a great time checking out all the objects they made–such a good time the room practically decorated itself!

The wall art is one of my favorite aspects of the new collection. I know it may seem like a small part compared to furniture pieces, but the new wall art really ended up tying the bedroom together and bringing in the many (dark) colors I used to create the perfect Gothic space. Another really cool addition was the gothic wardrobe, which came with some clothing and shoes to display on it to make the room feel really lived-in. If you’ve ever read my Room Reno blogs before, you’ll know that I have a great fondness for rooms that feel like they’ve actually been used by real people, and this wardrobe totally helped contribute to that feeling. Also, the shoes are really cute–I was already thinking about buying the Doc Marten sandals, but seeing them in game might drive me to actually buy them.
