Did you all see the new Sims 4 kit that just dropped?  The Sims 4 Grunge Revival Kit is now available. Let me tell you I have been waiting for grunge fashion for a longggg time!  I am so excited to take a look and review this Sims 4 kit because goth and grunge were my go-to aesthetics in High School and College!  I love grunge fashion so let’s take a peek at this Sims 4 Grunge Revival Kit!

What Is Grunge Fashion?

Before we get into the full Grunge Revival Kit Review, let’s discuss grunge fashion.  This fashion style has been around since the mid-1980s and usually went with the grunge music scene.  The music bands that really inspired this style were; Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and of course Nirvana.  Yeah, you know what we are talking about those flannel shirts, ripped jeans, and Converse shoes! What is interesting as the style was more of a low-key aesthetic but then turned mainstream in the 1990s.  There are so many different variants of grunge fashion as well; punk grunge, hippie grunge, pastel grunge, indie grunge, and 80s grunge.  Due to the music bands’ inspiration for the style 80s grunge is the most identifiable.  This style has been around for a long time and is not going anywhere.

 The basic elements of grunge fashion are loose fitting and durable clothing that is not form fitting.  Materials in grunge are generally cotton tees, flannel tops, striped sweaters, and jeans.   Thrift store wear is also completely acceptable clothing for this style as well as; Skull Caps, Combat Boots, and Band Tees.  As far as jeans go, low-rise ripped and wide-legged jeans are all acceptable.  This low-maintenance style also includes very light makeup and hairstyles that seem like nothing much was done.  Yea for messy half-up buns and eyeliner!

Why is it Trendy?

Now it is essential to understand the timing of all this before we jump on in to look at all the goodies in this Grunge Revival Kit Review.  Grunge has been on a fashion trend comeback for a long while now.  Some styles of grunge fashion now include Boho styles creating a new updated more designer-chic-looking grunge.  So really grunge never did go away. I usually see grunge as more of a fall/winter trend.  But with the boho element and other ways of styling it can be pulled off in the summer.  Instead of jeans, just long jean shorts would be an easy way to get that Summer grunge look, since it is Summer soon in the United States.

What Comes In the Kit

Now you have either already scrolled to the photos or are sitting there like “Come on Jezi, get to the stuff!!” So here we are… what comes in the Grunge Revival Kit… Before we start there are a total of twenty-five (Jezi Math) new items in the Sims 4 Grunge Kit. The overall aesthetic I am seeing is the 80 alternative rock grunge.  Which is normally what people think of when they hear grunge fashion.  This Kit has new clothing options for Teen thru Elder Sims.  And has both masculine and feminine styles and has accessories for this age group as well.  Another addition to this grunge kit is a couple of tattoos.  So let’s take a look!

Feminine Clothing

Overall there are some decent pieces with this kit.  I was expecting more torn-up pants or do-it-yourself amended clothing.  For the most part, I am relatively pleased with this kit.  We all know how much I hate letting go of CC so that really should say a lot.  I really like these ripped shorts and the belt design on them.

Masculine Clothing

The clothes in the masculine style are a lot of the same pieces from the feminine style, there are only a couple things that are not in both styles.  With that being said though this is typical of grunge fashion.  As the clothing is a little less fitted so it was not uncommon for clothing to be the same when this style was in its prime.

There are quite a few varieties of flannel in the swatches of the flannel shirt and some multi patterns giving the Do It Yourself and secondhand vibe.  There are also a good amount of tee shirts and hoodies that resemble band-like logos and other designs that are consistent with the grunge style.

Accessories

So looking at accessories there are a few different things in this kit; painted nails, some chain and lock jewelry, a chunky bracelet, big sunglasses, and a pair of biker shorts.  All of these you would have found in grunge fashion.  I am not a fan of the accessories as the textures and swatches are not as complete as they are on the clothes and shoes.  It is still a great addition to your game, as there was not much like this in EA content, so it is definitely nice to have access to these items!

Shoes

There are two pairs of shoes in this kit and they fit the overall grunge fashion aesthetic.  I love the checker shoes, as they are perfect! However, I would have liked to see a pair of combat boots.  Even in the general 80s/90s band grunge look combat boots are a staple part of the style.  It’s like you had two options of shoes with grunge… skater sneakers or combat boots.

Tattoos

Wahoooo New tattoo! I am not surprised to see tattoos in this kit as Tattoos and the grunge aesthetic are generally seen together.

Final Thoughts

Even with my excitement about this kit, I definitely feel some staples of grunge were missing as someone who has dressed the part for many years.  Sure there are great pieces in here, but I would have loved to see tie-around-the-waist flannels, ripped tights, high socks, more accessories, and hairstyles.  I adore the ripped shorts and the hoodies, these are super great quality.

I would still label this kit as a great kit, just more what I would classify as a preppy basic variant of 80s grunge.  Sure it has elements of actual 80s grunge, but everything is super clean and even the torn pants seem clean.  There are several all-new designs with loads of swatches and it is a kit, so it’s a smaller over all set.  I think my favorite piece is between the checkered sneakers and the torn up shorts. I love them both! So overall great kit and a decent addition to your game if you are looking for more alternative and grunge fashion.
