Prom 101: How To Survive The Prom Event

Have you ever wanted to complete the Prom Event with a gold reward?  Or even just go to a Prom in your Sims game?  Well, this Prom 101 guide will help you on your way!  It is Prom season here in the United States, so I figured this would be a great time to revisit the lovely High School Years Expansion Pack and get you all the details on how to complete this event!  You can also add a lot to make your Proms even more impressive with CC, and we are here to help.  Go Big or go home, right? Let’s get on with this and get you all to your gold-tier Proms in fashion!

Game Requirements – The High School Years Expansion

First, on our journey to the best Prom event ever, the Prom event was added as gameplay in the High School Years Expansion.  This makes sense because Prom is a dance in High School here in the United States. Don’t we will go more into this.  So to play the in-game event, you need the expansion; you could theoretically make an event yourself, which will be more work, but you can do it.

What is Prom?

An essential part of Prom 101 is to know what Prom even is.  With Simmers being from all over the globe, it is to be expected what some may call Prom may not be called the same thing in other areas of the world.  I am unsure if Prom is just a United States thing or if it is all over the world.  I would imagine different places have different types of school dances, and Prom is a school-hosted dance for students, generally juniors and seniors.  These two groups of students may be called something else in other school systems, but they are the two grades close to graduation.  Of course, some schools are also open to all students attending Prom.

Whatever the case may be for the school, Prom is a social dance.  There is typically a DJ at the dance to play music and a vote prior or at the dance for Prom royalty or Prom court.   Everyone gets dressed up, and usually, there are fancy decorations at the dance, making the event perfect for pictures.  There is also usually a photobooth or professional photographer at the dance to take photos.  There is typically a theme with decorations, food, and venue.  I remember the themes from my high school: a casino theme and a ‘Night in Paris.’  I forget what the casino one was called.  Activity-wise at a prom, there is lots of dancing, music, food, games, and usually other things around the theme of the dance.  They were both fun, and the casino one even had games.

5 Easy Steps

In this Prom 101 guide, I will highlight the five major areas to make your Prom even more successful.   Of course, the game will also guide you in your journey. The event will give you specific tasks to complete with a timer, like any other event in The Sims.  The event will also show up in your Sims’ calendars, and it will appear on mine. Prom is a WEEKLY event!

1 – The Prep Work

Your first step in this Prom 101 is relationship building and prep work.  Your Sim will see the Prom event on its calendar in the game.  Before Prom, if your Sim wants a date, they must ask someone or multiple people if they are denied to accompany them to dance.  This, of course, takes knowing the Sim you are asking to the Prom; I have not had a Sim yet say ok without at least a strong friend relationship.

2 – The Setting – Décor

There are loads of options as far as décor goes for a Prom venue.  If you want to do the whole-themed Prom, select a theme and start looking for CC.  I went with an “Under the Sea,” aka Little Mermaid-inspired Prom theme for this blog. I found a nice set with the balloon arch ready to go! The set had many snacks, but I downloaded ALL the cakes and treats I could find!

One thing to note is when designing your Prom lot, you will need to change the event type to the dance one.  If not, you will get the default Prom décor, and your designed theme will not show in the event.

Aside from removing a few windows, I chose not to change any building elements, as this was more realistic for a High School campus hosted Prom.  I tried to add rugs, as that brown floor did not go with my theme, but I guess I didn’t download enough CC.  Looking back, I would have loved to have downloaded more accent rugs or something to replace the floor with.  I was surprised the default plants in the auditorium matched the theme, so I left them in but moved them around.

3 – CAS Preparations

For your Prom 101 CAS preparations, you are just preparing your Sim’s Prom attire.  If you do not already have a formal attire set, you can ‘plan your outfit’ or Prom attire in the game.  Of course, downloading CC before playing the game helps a lot; the more options, the merrier in my book.  Just don’t tell my computer guy that. LOL, I tried to download ALL the dresses!

All jokes aside, once you set up your Prom outfit, your Sim will change into it at the event.  So this is a super helpful and easy mode on your end once you choose what to wear!

4 – The Day of Prom – Needs

On Prom day, you will need to make sure your Sim’s needs are met.  You don’t want to go to Prom, sleepy!  Get plenty of rest. That way, you can stay for the entire event!

Your Sim also needs to be clean!  No one wants to be stinky at Prom with all that dancing!  There are also loads of Sims in the same room, so it would impact ALL of the Sims’ moods!

5 – During Prom

The trick here is every second counts!  The goal is to get as many tasks completed so you can get that gold achievement.

Bronze is easy, and you just have to do a few things.  Silver really just takes a bit more effort.  However, gold, you are going to be hopping!  I would suggest only controlling one Sim at a time during the event to make it easier on yourself.

For this blog, I played the event twice; the first time, I got silver, and the second time, gold.  I paused several times to give my head and fingers a break.  But the goal was achieved with lots of yelling at my poor Sims.

The big trick is to get as much done before the court is announced; once that is done, the event ends very soon!  So you may have time for about two to three short tasks. Do the small things first, like grabbing a drink and voting for the Prom court. And then I worked on photos and dancing.

Summary

This was a lot of fun and very challenging to do.  However, after two attempts, I was successful.  I cheated a little and saved right before the event started in case I needed to repeat the event.  It worked out very well, as I got silver on the first go for this blog.  I have only ever done the Prom event one other time, and it was a total catastrophe! I just didn’t know what I was doing.

Out of the décor and objects, I loved the treat and cake décor so much!  Like, look how adorable that is!  We never had cake at our Proms, but they looked so lovely I had to. LOL. Everything matched so well as it is a set, so I was super pleased!
