The EA Sims buyout backlash has returned to the spotlight.

On August 4, 2026, Electronic Arts confirmed that its $55 billion acquisition had officially closed. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners now own EA.

The deal also took EA off the public stock market.

For The Sims community, the completed deal has brought old concerns back to the surface. Several major Sims creators criticized the acquisition when EA first announced it last year. Now, players are discussing those concerns again.

The EA Sims Buyout Backlash Returns

A new opinion piece from The Guardian added fuel to the debate this week.

Games journalist Jordan Erica Webber published the article on August 19. Webber says she has played The Sims for around 25 years. However, she now plans to stop supporting the franchise following EA’s takeover.

Her concerns focus on EA’s new owners. In particular, she discusses Saudi Arabia’s PIF and Affinity Partners.

Major Sims Creators Already Left EA’s Creator Network

Several well-known Sims creators took action after EA first announced the acquisition.

In October 2025, lilsimsie, Plumbella and James Turner left EA’s Creator Network.

The program gives creators several benefits. These can include early access, promotional support and opportunities to work directly with EA.

Their exits therefore carried more weight than a simple social media complaint.

PC Gamer reported on the departures at the time. All three creators raised concerns about EA’s new ownership. Lilsimsie described the situation as a “nightmare for our community.”

The takeover has now become reality. That has pushed the discussion back into the spotlight.

EA Says The Sims’ Values Have Not Changed

The Sims team has already responded to concerns about the franchise’s future.

In January 2026, EA published an update called “Four Things to Know Now about the Future of The Sims.”

EA told players:

“The values of The Sims are unchanged.”

The company also highlighted five core values: inclusivity, choice, creativity, community and play.

EA still presents those values as central to the franchise.

So far, the company has not announced any changes to representation or creative direction because of the takeover.

Why Has the Debate Returned Now?

Timing explains most of it.

Last year, EA had only announced the deal. Regulators, shareholders, and other parties still had to approve it.

That process has now ended.

PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners officially own Electronic Arts. Players can no longer treat the acquisition as something that might not happen.

That changes the conversation.

Some fans may continue playing while avoiding new purchases. Others may feel comfortable supporting the franchise as normal. Some creators have chosen to distance themselves from EA.

There is no single community response.
