Matthew Brady is a very satisfied man. His builder confirmed yesterday that the alterations and refurbishment of the old Wolff mansion is complete and there is nothing now to prevent the Brady family taking up residence there. Today they will do just that, and the Wolff estate will officially become Brady's Lookout.
There is a small irony in this whole undertaking, that has not escaped Matthew's attention. Matt Brady, husband of Eileen, father of Matt Jnr and Patrick, is a man of around 50 years, newly retired from his lifelong association with the sea - most recently as a freelance salvage tug captain- and financially secure due to the careful management and investment of family monies inherited from both his father and grandfather, not to mention his own nestegg, hard earned as it was.
Brady's Lookout [or the Wolff mansion, depending on your viewpoint] stands proudly on the outcrop of land jutting into the sea above what is now known as Sunnyside Strand, but was once called Rummy Cove.
Bradys had lived along this particular stretch of coast for generations before Patrick Matthew Brady [ our Matt's great-grandfather] gained some small measure of local notoriety as a rum runner - a smuggler - and this is where the irony of the situation arises. Of course, there were no buildings on the point in those days, and for an unknown number of years, Pat Brady used the beautiful little bay below Brady's Lookout as the landing point for his contraband. There was always a willing band of helpers who carried the small casks up a cliffside track, from the beach to their waiting carts, right about where Matthew's renovated house now stands. No one seems to know when this 'independent enterprise' ended, or even if it's demise was voluntary or otherwise - but it is known that Patrick Brady lived to the ripe old age of 92 and to the end of his life, always had a single tot of rum right after the sun went down.
Brady's Lookout is an imposing 4 levels of gracious living, having 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms [ plus powderroom] , a extensive deck area surrounding the in-ground pool, a roof-top sundeck with BBQ - and under-cover parking for 3 vehicles. There is also a single, open parking slot for guests or deliveries.
The ground floor of the new Brady home comprises the reception area with seating and phone connection to the house, and a full bathroom for the benefit of pool users. A staircase of beautifully restored, recycled marble leads to the upper floors for those with legitimate reasons for entry. Outside, aged timber decking and new brick paving
make for easy foot traffic - whether to the full-size pool, or to the seating with breathtaking ocean views.
On the next level we find the living room with TV lounge; a magnificent grand piano has pride of place here adjacent to the diningroom - and the kitchen is of moderate size, but fully functional with all the usual appliances - including the kitchen sink!
Up one more flight of those lovely marble stairs to the bedrooms and the 'accessory' rooms - a sound/audio centre with coffee and juice bars - a gym also with juice bar and basic shower setup - a gallery furnished with 2 artists' easels, overlooking the ocean - and an office with the best view in the house..
There are three bedrooms, one of which is located in the Master Suite. . .. a suite of rooms compriisng that double bedroom [which includes a desk and notebook computer] , a sittingroom with TV, a dressingroom with walk-in robe, and a bathroom. The remaining bedrooms - another double and a twin single - share a common bathroom - and there is a study desk with computer in the single room.
Finally, up a single-width flight and out onto the roof deck. . . . an expansive paved area with BBQ, meal seating and some cushioned loungers placed to take full advantage of the magnificent view, the sun and the sea breeze. A mariner's telescope will help identify any USO [Unidentified Sea-going Object] or migrating seabird that might cross the horizon.
Yes, Matthew Brady is a satisfied man . . . wouldn't you be . . in his shoes?
